My AI Agent Keeps Losing Context Mid-Conversation: Causes and Fixes

You set up your WhatsApp AI assistant. It answers the first question well. The customer follows up with "what about the blue one?" and the AI responds as if the conversation never happened. It asks for information already given. It gives a generic answer instead of building on what was discussed. The customer is frustrated.

Context loss is one of the most common problems with WhatsApp AI agents. It almost always has a specific technical or configuration cause: and most are fixable.

Why AI Agents Lose Context on WhatsApp

1. Session Timeouts

Many AI implementations use a session window to define one conversation. When a customer messages outside that window: even a few minutes later: the system treats it as a brand new conversation. The previous thread is not passed to the AI, so it has no memory of what was said.

Fix: Check your session timeout setting. Check how your platform manages conversation sessions. WhatsApp's 24-hour customer-service window is separate from AI memory: it controls messaging rules, not how long the assistant retains context. Your AI session should reflect how your customers actually converse: important state can be preserved beyond a single session where your platform supports it.

2. Conversation History Not Passed to the AI

Some AI setups send only the most recent message to the model rather than the full conversation thread. The AI sees "what about the blue one?" with no prior context. It cannot answer because it has not been given the earlier messages.

Fix: Confirm your platform passes the full conversation history to the AI on every turn. In Intelli, the assistant receives the complete thread as context for each response. If you are building a custom integration, your prompt to the language model should include all prior messages formatted as a dialogue: not just the latest input.

3. Flow-Based Chatbots vs AI Assistants

If your AI runs a structured decision tree and the customer goes off-script, the system may lose its place. The customer answers a question the flow did not expect, and it either repeats the last question or starts over.

Fix: This is a chatbot flow limitation, not true context loss. A flow-based chatbot follows a fixed path. An AI assistant can handle off-script questions more naturally than a flow-based chatbot: but provided the platform preserves and passes conversation context correctly. Switching to an AI model does not automatically solve context problems if session state is not stored or passed correctly.

If context loss happens specifically when customers go off-script, consider whether the task is better handled by an AI assistant than a structured flow. Read: How to Build a WhatsApp AI Chatbot for Your Business.

4. Webhook Delivery Failures

On the WhatsApp Business API, messages are delivered to your platform via webhook. Persistent webhook delivery failures or processing errors can cause messages to be delayed or missed by your application. Meta retries failed webhook deliveries for an extended period, but if your endpoint is unreliable or your application fails to process deliveries, messages can appear to disappear. The next response appears to ignore what came before because it genuinely never received it.

Fix: Check your platform's message delivery logs for gaps. Look for messages the customer sent that your platform has no record of. If you see gaps: check your webhook URL is publicly accessible, confirm your SSL certificate is valid, and verify your app is subscribed to the correct WhatsApp Business Account. 5. AI Context Window Limits

Large language models have a maximum context window: a limit on how much conversation history they can process at once. In very long conversations, older messages may be dropped to fit within that limit.

Fix: Context window problems are more likely in long or information-heavy threads. If context loss happens specifically in extended conversations, consider summarising earlier history rather than passing the full raw thread, or triggering a human handover when conversations become unusually long.

Training Your AI to Reduce Context Problems

A strong knowledge base improves answer quality and reduces unnecessary back-and-forth. It will not fix true context-loss problems caused by session handling or missing conversation history: those are separate issues. But when the AI answers accurately the first time, conversations stay shorter and context management becomes less of a concern.

In Intelli, training the AI assistant is straightforward. You upload your product catalogue, FAQs, pricing documents, and policies directly to the knowledge base. The assistant learns from them. As your business grows: new products, updated pricing, changed policies: you update the document and the change is reflected immediately.

The quality of the knowledge base affects answer accuracy. Conversation coherence depends on both that knowledge and how well the platform preserves and passes conversation context. These are separate concerns: a strong knowledge base will not compensate for broken session handling, and good session management will not compensate for a knowledge base that does not contain the right information.

Setup takes about five minutes: Set Up Your AI Assistant in Intelli.

What Good Context Looks Like vs What Goes Wrong

Context loss (poor implementation):

Customer: "I am looking for a dress for a wedding. Something elegant, not black." AI: "We have a beautiful collection. What is your size?" Customer: "Size 12." AI: "What occasion is this for?" Customer: "I already said: a wedding." AI: "Of course. What colour would you prefer?"

The AI has lost the colour preference and the occasion already stated.

Context retained (good implementation):

Customer: "I am looking for a dress for a wedding. Something elegant, not black." AI: "For a wedding in that style, you might love our Amara midi in champagne or our Adaeze wrap in forest green. What size are you?" Customer: "Size 12." AI: "Both are available in size 12. The Amara is listed at $95 and the Adaeze at $110. Would you like more details on either?"

Every response builds on what came before. The customer does not repeat themselves.

Quick Diagnostic Checklist

Run through these to identify your specific cause:

  • Context loss after a gap of more than a few minutes: likely a session timeout

  • Loss from the very first follow-up message: likely full history not being passed to the AI

  • Loss only when customers go off-script: likely a flow-based chatbot limitation

  • AI appears to have skipped a message: likely a webhook delivery or processing issue

  • Loss only in very long conversations: likely a context window limit

Frequently Asked Questions

Does WhatsApp itself cause context loss? Rarely directly, but persistent webhook delivery failures or processing errors on your application side can make messages appear missing. WhatsApp's own delivery is reliable, but your platform's ability to receive and process those deliveries is where issues typically originate.

Will switching from a chatbot to an AI assistant fix context problems? It can help when context loss is caused by rigid flow logic that breaks on off-script messages. AI assistants handle open-ended conversation more naturally. But if the underlying session handling or context passing is broken, switching model types alone will not fix it: the platform's state management needs to be correct regardless.

How long should a WhatsApp AI session window be? There is no single ideal duration. It should reflect how your customers typically interact with your business. WhatsApp's 24-hour customer-service window is separate: it controls when businesses can send free-form service messages without a template, not how long the AI should retain conversation context.

Does Intelli give agents access to conversation history? Yes. The shared inbox gives agents the full conversation thread when they take over from AI, so they can pick up without asking the customer to repeat themselves. For specific details on how the AI assistant handles context across sessions, see Intelli's documentation.
