Meta Business Agent is an AI assistant built natively into WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger that handles customer conversations automatically. It answers questions, recommends products, books appointments, qualifies sales leads, and routes complex queries to a human when needed — without anyone on your team typing a single reply. It launched globally on June 3, 2026 at Meta's Conversations conference in London. More than one million businesses were already using a version of it before the global rollout.
Why Did Meta Build This?
WhatsApp has over three billion users. More than 200 million businesses use WhatsApp to communicate with customers. Until June 2026, those businesses relied on human agents, third-party chatbot tools, or the WhatsApp Business API to handle conversations at scale.
Meta's move is straightforward: embed AI directly into the platforms where billions of conversations already happen, so any business can automate customer communication without building custom infrastructure or subscribing to a third-party platform.
For small businesses across Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia where WhatsApp is the primary business communication channel, this means AI-assisted customer service is now accessible without technical setup or upfront cost.
What Can Meta Business Agent Actually Do?
At launch, the agent handles the following:
Answer customer questions. Trained on your business information — products, pricing, hours, policies — the agent responds to inbound messages using your own content as its knowledge base. Customers messaging your WhatsApp number at 2am get an accurate response immediately.
Recommend products. When a customer asks "what would you suggest for dry skin?" the agent draws from your product catalogue and provides relevant recommendations with context.
Book appointments. The agent can check availability and handle booking requests directly in the conversation. A customer asking "can I book for Saturday?" gets a response that progresses the booking rather than being told to call back.
Qualify sales leads. When a customer expresses purchase intent, the agent can collect the information needed to qualify the lead — budget, requirements, timeline — before routing to a sales team member.
Hand off to a human. You define the rules. The agent handles what it can and escalates appropriately when a conversation requires human judgement.
Daily briefing. Meta is testing a feature that provides business owners with a morning summary of conversations that occurred overnight, flagging anything that needs attention.
What Are the Two Versions of Meta Business Agent?
There are two distinct tiers, and the difference matters.
Self-serve (available now): Any business can activate this inside the WhatsApp Business app, Instagram Pro, Messenger, or Meta Business Suite in under ten minutes. No code. You configure it with your business information using Meta's no-code builder (Weave), set your handoff rules, and the agent starts responding. This is the version most businesses will use.
Enterprise platform (limited access): A separate infrastructure layer built for larger organisations that want to build, customise, and deploy agents connected to third-party systems like Shopify, Zendesk, and Salesforce. Meta positions this as direct API integration with engineering work done in-house or through a Business Solution Provider. This tier is in limited access as of July 2026 with pricing still to be confirmed.
How Is Meta Business Agent Different from a WhatsApp Chatbot?
Before Meta Business Agent, businesses wanting automated WhatsApp conversations had two options: build a rule-based chatbot using the WhatsApp Business API through a platform like Intelli, or use flow-based automation within the API.
The key differences:
Meta Business Agent is built by Meta and runs on Meta's infrastructure. There is no third-party platform in the loop for the self-serve version. Meta writes the AI replies based on your configured knowledge.
API-based AI assistants are trained on your specific documents. A platform like Intelli lets you upload your own FAQs, product documentation, pricing guides, and internal policies. The AI answers based on that specific knowledge base. Meta Business Agent works from the knowledge you input into Meta's configuration interface.
API platforms offer capabilities Meta Business Agent does not. Broadcast campaigns, team inbox with conversation assignment, full CRM integration, multi-channel unification, and detailed analytics are all features that live at the API tier, not inside Meta Business Agent's self-serve version
What Is WhatsApp Business Discovery?
Alongside Meta Business Agent, Meta announced WhatsApp Business Discovery — a new set of tools that let customers find businesses directly inside WhatsApp. Customers will be able to search for businesses by name in the WhatsApp search bar, or share a business contact card with friends and family.
This is a meaningful shift. WhatsApp has historically been a channel businesses push outbound messages through. Discovery makes it a place where customers can find you without a prior touchpoint, more similar to how Instagram or Google work.
Business Discovery is not live yet as of July 2026. Meta confirmed it is coming in the months following the June launch.
Is Meta Business Agent Free?
At launch, yes. Meta confirmed the agent is free to use initially. Paid tiers are coming.
From August 1, 2026, Meta will charge for Meta Business Agent on a per-token basis at approximately $2.00 per million tokens. In practice, a typical message exchange costs roughly 4 to 5 cents in the US market, though cost scales with conversation complexity. Shorter, factual replies cost less. Longer multi-turn conversations cost more.
Smaller businesses will access the agent through WhatsApp Business Premium subscription tiers. Larger enterprises will be charged based on token usage directly.
What Does Meta Business Agent Mean for African Businesses?
For small and medium businesses across Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and broader Africa where WhatsApp is already the primary sales and support channel, Meta Business Agent lowers the barrier to AI-assisted customer service significantly.
A food delivery business in Accra with one staff member managing WhatsApp enquiries can now have the agent handle common questions — delivery zones, pricing, hours — while the owner focuses on fulfilment. A travel agency in Nairobi can have the agent qualify enquiries for safari packages overnight, so the team walks in each morning to a list of ready-to-close leads rather than a backlog of unanswered messages.
The limitation is the same as the WhatsApp Business App itself: it works well for solo operators and small teams handling inbound conversations. The moment a business needs to send campaigns to thousands of customers, manage a team inbox across multiple agents, or connect WhatsApp to a CRM, the self-serve agent is no longer sufficient. That is where the WhatsApp Business API and platforms like Intelli begin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Meta Business Agent available in Africa? Yes. The global rollout began June 3, 2026. Meta confirmed availability for businesses of all sizes globally. Availability within specific apps (WhatsApp Business, Instagram Pro, Messenger, Meta Business Suite) may vary by country. Keep your WhatsApp Business app updated to receive the feature.
Does Meta Business Agent replace a human support team? For routine, repetitive queries, yes. For complex issues, high-value sales conversations, and situations requiring judgement, no. The agent is designed to escalate appropriately. The value is in removing the routine volume so your team handles only what requires a human.
Can I use Meta Business Agent and the WhatsApp Business API at the same time? Yes. The Meta Business Agent Platform's enterprise tier is built to work alongside the WhatsApp Business API. For businesses on the API through Intelli, the self-serve agent and API tools serve different functions and are not mutually exclusive.
What languages does Meta Business Agent support? Meta confirmed the agent responds in the customer's local language. For African businesses, this covers English, French, and Swahili at minimum, with broader language support consistent with WhatsApp's existing localisation.
Is there a task restriction on what the agent can do? Yes. Since January 15, 2026, Meta requires all AI agents on WhatsApp to be task-specific, not general-purpose. A customer support agent, booking assistant, or product consultation bot is compliant. An open-ended general chatbot without a defined business purpose is not. Meta can restrict a number's access for non-compliance.
