Storage considerations: WhatsApp backups count against your Google Drive storage. A business with years of conversation history and many media files (images, documents shared with customers) can accumulate several gigabytes. Free Google accounts include 15GB shared across all Google services.
iCloud Backup (iOS)
On iPhone, WhatsApp Business chats back up to iCloud rather than Google Drive.
To enable iCloud backup:
Open WhatsApp Business

Tap "Auto Backup" and select your preferred frequency

To restore on a new iPhone: Set up WhatsApp Business on the new device. During the setup process, you are prompted to restore from iCloud backup if one is available.

Exporting Individual Chats as Text Files
For specific conversations you want to save or share (a dispute resolution, an important order confirmation, a customer testimonial), WhatsApp allows you to export individual chats as text files.
On Android:
Open the conversation
Tap the three-dot menu inside the chat
Tap "More," then "Export Chat"
Choose "Include Media" or "Without Media"
Share the file via email, Google Drive, or any file sharing option

The exported file is a .txt file containing the conversation with timestamps. Media files (images, documents, voice notes) are exported separately if you choose to include them. A chat with extensive media can produce a very large export.
Important Note Before Migrating to the API
If you are planning to migrate your WhatsApp Business App number to the API (see our migration guide), back up your chats before starting. Once the number is migrated, the conversation history from the App does not transfer to the API platform. Your conversations remain accessible in your Google Drive or iCloud backup, but not within the new platform.
For businesses with long, valuable customer conversation histories, consider exporting key individual chats before migrating in addition to running the full backup.
