What is Instagram comment automation?
Instagram comment automation is software that detects new comments on your posts and responds on your behalf. The response can be a public reply under the comment, a private message to the commenter, or both.
It is different from DM automation, which handles conversations that people start in your inbox. Comment automation handles the public conversations happening on your content, then moves the right ones into private chat. Intelli supports both from one workspace through its Instagram channel.
Why do comments matter as much as DMs?
Comments are where many buying conversations start. People write "price?", "is this available?" or "do you deliver?" under a post because it is the easiest place to ask. If nobody answers, two things happen: the person moves on, and everyone else reading the thread sees an unanswered question.
Replying fast in public shows the account is active. Moving the details into a private message keeps prices, addresses and personal information out of the comments.
How does comment automation work?
A customer comments on one of your Instagram or Facebook posts.
Intelli detects the comment and passes it to your assistant.
The assistant posts a public reply, sends a private message, or does both, depending on your setting.
If the customer answers the private message, the conversation continues in your inbox with the assistant or a teammate.
Anything sensitive or high-intent can be handed to a human without losing the history.
What are Meta's rules for replying to comments by DM?
Private replies to comments are governed by Meta's Private Replies documentation. The key rules:
Seven-day window. You can send a private reply within 7 days of the comment. For Instagram Live, replies are only allowed while the broadcast is running.
One message per comment. Only one message can be sent to the commenter. Follow-ups are allowed only after the person replies, and within 24 hours of that reply.
Where it lands. The message goes to the person's inbox if they follow your account, or to their message requests if they do not. It includes a link to the post they commented on.
These rules shape how you write your first private message. It has to be useful on its own, because you only get one.
Which comment automation mode should you use?
Intelli's comments automation gives you four settings:
Mode | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
Off | No automated replies to comments | Accounts that want to handle comments manually |
Public replies only | The assistant answers under the comment | Simple questions where the answer is safe to share publicly |
Public plus private replies | Short public reply, then a DM with details | Product questions, pricing, bookings, lead capture |
Private replies only | The assistant DMs without a public reply | Sensitive topics or accounts that prefer a quiet thread |
For most businesses, public plus private is the starting point. Keep the public reply short and move specifics to the DM.
What can your team do in the Comments inbox?
Intelli adds a Comments inbox that brings post comments into one place. From there your team can:
View comment threads by post
Reply publicly to comments
Send private follow-up messages
Hide or show comments
Retry failed replies
Open the related DM conversation
Pause AI replies on individual posts when you want to take over manually
You can also pick a different AI assistant just for comments and customise the opening message for private replies using {customer_name} and {business_name}.
How do you set it up?
Connect your account. Use an Instagram Professional account (Business or Creator). The Instagram setup guide walks through it, and the connection usually takes under a minute.
Train your assistant on your prices, delivery details, policies and FAQs. A thin knowledge base leads to weak answers. Our guide to setting up your assistant covers the options.
Choose a comments mode in the comments automation settings.
Write your opening message for private replies with the name variables.
Test with a second account. Comment on a post and check both the public reply and the DM.
Review the inbox daily for the first week and adjust.
If your account is missing the required comment permissions, Intelli shows a prompt to reconnect it.
What are the best practices?
Keep public replies short. "Thanks for asking, we have sent you a DM with the details" works.
Make the DM self-contained. You have one message before the customer has to reply.
Hand off complaints and payment issues. Automation suits repeat questions. Frustrated customers need a person.
Pause automation on special posts. Use the per-post pause for sensitive announcements or giveaways you want to run by hand.
Review weekly. Read a sample of conversations and update the assistant's knowledge.
For the DM side of the workflow, see our guides to AI-powered customer engagement and the WhatsApp assistant, which shares the same inbox.
